Kelley, James Douglas Jerrold 1847-

Naval officer; born in New York City, Dec. 25, 1847; graduated at the United States Naval Academy in 1868; promoted ensign in 1869; master in 1870; lieutenant in 1872; lieutenant-commander in 1893; and commander in 1899. For a prize essay written in 1881 he received a gold medal from the United States Naval Institute. During the war with Spain (1898) he was chairman of the board on auxiliary vessels; and in 1900-1 was on duty in Chinese waters. He is widely known by his numerous writings on naval subjects. His publications include The question of ships; Our Navy; A desperate chance; American yachts; The ship's Company; The story of coast defence; American men-oa — War; The Navy of the United States, 1875–;99, etc.
